Île d’Oléron: a true paradise for shore fishing

Fishing on foot is much more than a leisure activity on the Ile d’Oléron: it’s a local tradition, an immersion in a preserved environment, and a privileged moment to share with the family. From our campsite in Saint-Denis-d’Oléron, set off at low tide on the foreshore, net and bucket in hand, in search of cockles, clams, periwinkles, wild oysters and other ocean treasures.

Between environmental education and simple pleasure, fishing on foot in Charente-Maritime is accessible to all, young and old alike. To practice in complete safety and with respect for biodiversity, it is essential to find out about local angling rules, including minimum catch sizes, authorized quantities and protected areas.

You can admire the Grand Sabia lock 150 m from the campsite, or others a little further on, near the Chassiron lighthouse. Typical of the island, the fish locks are a traditional fishing method still in use on concessions, which is why fishing there is not permitted.
